Current office and 2026 campaign

Amanda Tyler McGuire is the Chairperson of the Hickory City Schools Board of Education, representing Ward 01, with a term running December 2021 to December 2026 1. She filed as a Republican candidate for re-election to the seat in the November 3, 2026 general election 2.

Office history

McGuire was first elected to the Ward 01 seat in the November 2021 municipal election, defeating Phyllis Michaux 181 votes to 49 and succeeding outgoing member Beth Meadlock 3. Her board colleagues subsequently selected her as board Chairperson, with Lakeyhisa Hannah serving as Vice Chairperson 1.

Legislative record and accomplishments

As a 2021 candidate, McGuire addressed racial achievement gaps, staff turnover, and a possible student/employee vaccine mandate at a candidate forum reported by the Hickory Daily Record 4. In October 2025, writing as board Chairperson, she published an opinion letter opposing a proposed merger of Hickory City Schools with Newton-Conover City Schools and Catawba County Schools, arguing it would burden taxpayers, weaken local decision-making, and harm children's educational experience; she noted the board's request for an independent financial study of the merger had gone unanswered for more than a month 5.
