Avery Lowery Crump

Avery Michelle Crump is the incumbent North Carolina 24th Prosecutorial District Attorney, the chief prosecutor for Guilford County, and she is seeking re‑election in the November 3, 2026 general election ¹. The district attorney’s office is responsible for prosecuting criminal cases, overseeing assistant district attorneys, and managing the administrative functions of the DA’s office within the 24th prosecutorial district ¹.

Crump earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994 and a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina Central School of Law in 1997 ¹¹¹. She graduated from Statesville Senior High School in North Carolina ¹¹.

She began her legal career as an assistant district attorney in Bronx County, New York, in 1997. In January 2000 she returned to North Carolina to serve as an assistant district attorney for Guilford County, a position she held until the end of 2008 ¹.

In 2008 Crump was elected to the North Carolina District Court for the 18th Judicial District, which serves Guilford County, and she served as a district court judge until 2018, winning re‑election in 2012 and 2016 ¹.

Crump made history in 2018 when she was elected the first female and first African‑American district attorney in Guilford County, defeating Stephanie Reese in the Democratic primary with 53.56 % of the vote and running unopposed in the general election ¹¹. She succeeded longtime DA Doug Henderson, who retired that year ¹¹. She was re‑elected in 2022, winning the Democratic primary against Brenton J. Boyce with 66.1 % of the vote and receiving 100 % of the general‑election vote (116,247 votes) ¹.
