LaHoma Smith Romocki is a Democratic candidate for the Granville County Board of Commissioners, District 6, in the November 3 2026 election. She is currently an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, where she teaches students pursuing health‑profession careers and maintains an active cancer‑prevention research portfolio.[11]
Born in Durham, North Carolina, Romocki moved with her husband Tim to Granville County in 1991 and raised two children, Rozalia and Moses, on a farm just outside the Creedmoor city limits. After years of community involvement, she returned to school to complete a Ph.D., balancing coursework with parenting two small children.[11]
Romocki’s professional career includes extensive service with the U.S. Peace Corps. She and her husband served as volunteers teaching agricultural techniques and public‑health practices, and she later became Country Director for the agency’s third‑largest program in sub‑Saharan Africa, overseeing volunteer operations and partnerships.[11] In academia, she holds faculty appointments at NCCU and UNC, focusing on health‑profession education and research.[11]
Her local civic engagement spans more than fifteen years leading a Girl Scouts troop, participation on the Granville County Human Relations Commission (where she was recognized for youth service), and service on the Granville/Vance District Board of Health. She is a founding member of the League of Women Voters of Granville County (2013‑present) and has served as Chair of the Granville County Democratic Party since 2017. Earlier community activities include playing on the “Healthy Hoopsters” basketball team (2005, 2007) to promote drug‑free schools and supporting the South Granville Exchange Club’s annual Spring Fling in the 1990s.[11]
Romocki emphasizes continued investment in public health, youth programs, and community cohesion. Her platform draws on her experience in international development, higher‑education teaching, and local board service, promising to bring a health‑focused, collaborative approach to county governance.[11]
