{"biography":"LaHoma Smith Romocki is a Democratic candidate for the Granville County Board of Commissioners, District\u202f6, in the November\u202f3\u202f2026 election.  She is currently an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, where she teaches students pursuing health\u2011profession careers and maintains an active cancer\u2011prevention research portfolio.[11]\n\nBorn in Durham, North\u202fCarolina, Romocki moved with her husband Tim to Granville County in 1991 and raised two children, Rozalia and Moses, on a farm just outside the Creedmoor city limits.  After years of community involvement, she returned to school to complete a Ph.D., balancing coursework with parenting two small children.[11]\n\nRomocki\u2019s professional career includes extensive service with the U.S. Peace Corps.  She and her husband served as volunteers teaching agricultural techniques and public\u2011health practices, and she later became Country Director for the agency\u2019s third\u2011largest program in sub\u2011Saharan Africa, overseeing volunteer operations and partnerships.[11]  In academia, she holds faculty appointments at NCCU and UNC, focusing on health\u2011profession education and research.[11]\n\nHer local civic engagement spans more than fifteen years leading a Girl Scouts troop, participation on the Granville County Human Relations Commission (where she was recognized for youth service), and service on the Granville/Vance District Board of Health.  She is a founding member of the League of Women Voters of Granville County (2013\u2011present) and has served as Chair of the Granville County Democratic Party since 2017.  Earlier community activities include playing on the \u201cHealthy Hoopsters\u201d basketball team (2005,\u202f2007) to promote drug\u2011free schools and supporting the South Granville Exchange Club\u2019s annual Spring Fling in the 1990s.[11]\n\nRomocki emphasizes continued investment in public health, youth programs, and community cohesion.
