He was first elected sheriff in the November 2018 general election, after winning a close May 2018 Republican primary to succeed retiring Sheriff Tony Perry, and was re-elected in 2022 [1][2][3]. As of December 2025, Jones has filed for re-election in the 2026 election cycle [4].\n\n## Background and education\n\nJones grew up as the son of a sheriff, and his interest in law enforcement began at an early age. He began his law enforcement career with the Elizabeth City Police Department in 1990.
