Burwell skipped a Henderson-Vance Black Leadership Caucus candidate event ahead of the Democratic primary, instead submitting a recorded message criticizing primary opponent Amanda Burnette's interim appointment to the clerk's office: "She now sits in the office, right now, not by your vote... but by personal gain and collaboration with a judge." He described his own campaign as more transparent: "My plan is not hidden, it's open... unlike my opponent" 2.
