Asa Bryant Buck III, the longstanding Sheriff of Carteret County, North Carolina, ran in the 2026 Republican primary for North Carolina's 1st Congressional District. He was one of five Republican candidates and came in second in the March 3, 2026 primary, behind Laurie Buckhout. Buck retired from his position as Carteret County Sheriff on June 1, 2026, after nearly 20 years in the role.
Buck supported the Trump administration's immigration and drug enforcement policies and campaigned on conservative values: lower taxes, less government regulation, and individual liberty.
Background and education
Buck was born and raised in Carteret County. He graduated from East Carteret High School in 1993 and earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from East Carolina University in 1998.
Career
Buck began his law enforcement career in 1998 as a bailiff, was promoted to patrol deputy in 1999, became a sergeant in 2002, and was named Lieutenant of the Patrol Division in 2003. He was first elected Carteret County Sheriff in 2006 and served continuously in that role for nearly 20 years.
