Robert "Bobby" Hanig is a Republican member of the North Carolina State Senate representing District 1; he assumed office January 1, 2025 and is not running for re-election to that seat in 2026 1. Hanig instead sought the Republican nomination for North Carolina's 1st Congressional District in 2026; Laurie Buckhout defeated him and three other candidates (Asa Buck, Eric Rouse, and Ashley-Nicole Russell) in the March 3, 2026 Republican primary, with Hanig finishing third at 16.2% of the vote (10,924 votes) 1.

During the 2025–2026 session he chairs the Appropriations on General Government and Information Technology Committee and the Senate State and Local Government Committee, and serves on the Agriculture, Energy, and Environment Committee, Education/Higher Education Committee, and Senate Transportation Committee 1.
