Robert Tyrone Reives II

Robert Tyrone Reives II is the incumbent Democratic leader of the North Carolina House of Representatives and the candidate for re‑election to represent District 54 in the November 3, 2026 general election. He serves as the House Democratic (minority) Leader for the 2025‑2026 session and his current term runs until January 1, 2027【1†L1-L4】【8†L1-L4】. District 54 covers all of Chatham County and portions of Randolph County【1†L1-L3】【9†L4-L6】.

Reives was born on September 24, 1970 and grew up in Sanford, North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration‑Finance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Juris Doctor from the UNC School of Law【9†L9-L12】. After law school he worked as an assistant district attorney in Lee County before entering private practice, where he has been a partner at Wilson & Reives, a law firm serving the region【13†L1-L4】.

First appointed to the North Carolina House on January 29, 2014, Reives has been re‑elected six times, most recently in 2024, and has served continuously for over a decade【1†L1-L3】【9†L1-L3】. Early in his legislative career he held leadership positions such as Freshman Caucus Co‑Chair and treasurer of the Legislative Black Caucus【13†L5-L7】. During his tenure Reives has served on numerous committees, most recently the Appropriations Committee, the Appropriations‑Justice and Public Safety Committee, Federal Relations and American Indian Affairs, Marine Resources and Aquaculture, Redistricting, and Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House【1†L13-L20】. He has also chaired or vice‑chaired committees such as Education‑Community Colleges and Judiciary III in earlier sessions【1†L21-L30】.

Reives’ legislative agenda emphasizes strengthening public schools, protecting children, the disabled, the environment, and property rights. His campaign site notes he has sponsored bills on these topics and highlights his work on rural investment and price‑relief measures for families【12†L1-L4】【13†L1-L4】. He has been recognized by the League of Conservation Voters with a Green Tie Rising Star Award and has earned endorsements from the North Carolina AFL‑CIO, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and the Sierra Club【13†L5-L7】.
