{"biography":"Robert Tyrone Reives\u202fII is the incumbent Democratic leader of the North Carolina House of Representatives and the candidate for re\u2011election to represent District\u202f54 in the November\u202f3,\u202f2026 general election. He serves as the House Democratic (minority) Leader for the 2025\u20112026 session and his current term runs until January\u202f1,\u202f2027\u30101\u2020L1-L4\u3011\u30108\u2020L1-L4\u3011. District\u202f54 covers all of Chatham County and portions of Randolph County\u30101\u2020L1-L3\u3011\u30109\u2020L4-L6\u3011.\n\nReives was born on September\u202f24,\u202f1970 and grew up in Sanford, North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration\u2011Finance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Juris Doctor from the UNC School of Law\u30109\u2020L9-L12\u3011. After law school he worked as an assistant district attorney in Lee County before entering private practice, where he has been a partner at Wilson\u202f&\u202fReives, a law firm serving the region\u301013\u2020L1-L4\u3011.\n\nFirst appointed to the North Carolina House on January\u202f29,\u202f2014, Reives has been re\u2011elected six times, most recently in 2024, and has served continuously for over a decade\u30101\u2020L1-L3\u3011\u30109\u2020L1-L3\u3011. Early in his legislative career he held leadership positions such as Freshman Caucus Co\u2011Chair and treasurer of the Legislative Black Caucus\u301013\u2020L5-L7\u3011. In December\u202f2020 his peers elected him House Democratic Leader, a role he continues to hold\u30109\u2020L13-L14\u3011\u30108\u2020L1-L4\u3011.\n\nDuring his tenure Reives has served on numerous committees, most recently the Appropriations Committee, the Appropriations\u2011Justice and Public Safety Committee, Federal Relations and American Indian Affairs, Marine Resources and Aquaculture, Redistricting, and Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House\u30101\u2020L13-L20\u3011. He has also chaired or vice\u2011chaired committees such as Education\u2011Community Colleges and Judiciary III in earlier sessions\u30101\u2020L21-L30\u3011.\n\nReives\u2019 legislative agenda emphasizes strengthening public schools, protecting children, the disabled, the environment, and property rights. His campaign site notes he has sponsored bills on these topics and highlights his work on rural investment and price\u2011relief measures for families\u301012\u2020L1-L4\u3011\u301013\u2020L1-L4\u3011. He has been recognized by the League of Conservation Voters with a Green Tie Rising Star Award and has earned endorsements from the North Carolina AFL\u2011CIO, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and the Sierra Club\u301013\u2020L5-L7\u3011.\n\nBeyond the Capitol, Reives is active in his community: he serves on the boards of the Lee County Educational Foundation, First Citizens Bank advisory board, Lee County Boys & Girls Club, and holds leadership roles in the Lee County Democratic Party and local bar associations\u301013\u2020L8-L12\u3011.
