Current office and 2026 campaign

Joseph Allen Gibson III of Stokesdale, NC has sought the Republican nomination for NC House District 65 in three consecutive cycles -- 2022, 2024, and 2026 -- without winning the primary. In the March 3, 2026 primary he placed third among three Republican candidates, behind winner Seth Woodall and incumbent Rep. A. Reece Pyrtle Jr., receiving 460 votes according to the NC State Board of Elections' official precinct-level results ².

Career

In the May 2022 Republican primary for the same seat, Gibson received 20.1% of the vote (1,455 votes), losing to incumbent Reece Pyrtle ¹. He received about 2,400 votes in the March 2024 primary, again losing to Pyrtle, according to official state election results ³.

The Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism identified Gibson by name in a 2022 report, stating he "is a white supremacist and anti-government extremist," and documented his hosting of a podcast simulcast on the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement's media network, posts praising the group and its leader, and social-media posts referencing "the New World Order" ¹.

Documented disputes and controversies

ADL researchers reported that Gibson used his podcast to share content they characterized as racist jokes, to promote NSM events, and to interact on-air with NSM members, including the group's leader, Burt Colucci. In a February 2021 episode, per ADL's reporting, Gibson said he was not himself an NSM member but stated, "I do believe in what Burt and the organization [NSM] stands for and I do believe they should be a recognized party on the ballot." He also promoted an NSM rally in Phoenix, Arizona, telling listeners "if you wanna meet Joe Gibson, you come on down there" ¹.
