Current office and 2026 campaign
Thomas Kyle Jones is a Republican candidate for North Carolina District Court Judge, District 1, Seat 4, in the 2026 election. District 1 serves Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties. He is seeking to fill the seat vacated by Judge Edgar Barnes, who retired after twenty-eight years on the bench. Jones announced his candidacy at the Currituck County Republican Party meeting in January 2026.
Background and education
Jones grew up in Perquimans County. He graduated from Perquimans County High School in 2003, earned his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University in 2007, and received his Juris Doctorate from Liberty University School of Law in 2011.
Career
Jones began his legal career in 2013 as a prosecutor. He has worked as an Assistant District Attorney in the First Judicial District for nearly twelve years, serving under District Attorneys Andrew Womble and Jeff Cruden. Over his career he has handled tens of thousands of cases and appeared in District Court in all seven counties of the First Judicial District.
Jones served three consecutive four-year terms on the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners from 2012 to 2024, becoming the youngest person ever elected to that board. He served as Vice Chairman and later as Chairman of the board. He also chaired the Albemarle District Jail Board and served on the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
Family
He is married to Grace Jones, a theatre teacher. They own a residential rental property business.
