James Richard Von Canon Jr., known as Jim Von Canon, is the Republican incumbent candidate for the Moore County Board of Commissioners District I in 2026. He is serving his first term on the board, ran unopposed in the 2026 primary, and will advance to the November 3, 2026 general election. He lives in Lakeview, NC.
Von Canon is a lifelong Moore County native whose family has lived in the county for more than 130 years. After high school he worked locally and served as a lieutenant on the West End Fire Department, then worked as a police officer in Durham, NC.
Von Canon joined the U.S. Army at age 32 and spent the majority of his 29-year military career working in Special Operations at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty, NC), retiring in September 2018 at the rank of Special Forces Sergeant Major. After retiring from the Army, he became involved in Republican Party politics and worked to support the preservation of the Crystal Lake Historic District in Lakeview. As a sitting Moore County Commissioner, Von Canon serves on the Fire Commission, the Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Economic Task Force, the Homeless Task Force, the Law Enforcement/Veterans Task Force, and the Solid Waste Task Force.
Von Canon has a wife and three children, all of whom were educated in Moore County schools.
