He served as a U.S. Naval Reserve commander (O-5), completing active duty during the Persian Gulf "Tanker Wars," on drug interdiction missions in the Caribbean, and in the Mediterranean. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and two U.S. Coast Guard medals.
Hamby has served more than 14 years as vice chairman of the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute Board of Trustees, and is a past president of the Rotary Club of Granite Falls. An Eagle Scout himself, he served as a Scout leader for more than 20 years.
