Jason William Smith is the District Attorney for North Carolina Prosecutorial District 6, covering New Hanover and Pender counties. He was elected in November 2024 and sworn in on December 3, 2024. He is the Republican incumbent running for re-election in 2026.
Background and education
Smith was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in business and economics from Virginia Military Institute and a Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1999.
Career
After law school, Smith worked briefly at a financial brokerage firm, then joined Webb & Graves PLLC focusing on business, tax, and estate law. He opened his own practice in Wilmington in 2006. He joined the District 6 District Attorney's Office as an Assistant District Attorney in 2010 and took charge of the Pender County office around 2014, managing it for approximately a decade before his election as District Attorney. He has prosecuted cases including white-collar crime, violent offenses, homicides, crimes against children, and human trafficking.
Smith participates in the Wilmington Rotary Club and regularly speaks with schools and nonprofits about crime prevention. He received the 2025 Smoking Shields North Carolina Person of the Year Award and The Carousel Center's 2020 Tin Man Biggest Heart Award.
Family
Smith is married to attorney Tamara, and they have four children. The family resides in Pender County.
