Carver was born and raised in Fayetteville, the fourth of five children of a building contractor and a waitress ². His mother died when he was 15; he lived independently and worked at a car wash to support himself through high school ². He worked 25 years at the Kelly-Springfield Tire plant, a Goodyear subsidiary, rising to vacation-replacement supervisor and serving as shop steward and elected Division Chairman for the United Rubber Workers / United Steelworkers, in which capacity he called the plant's first strike in 1996 ². He retired from Goodyear in 2001 ². He has taught at Gaston College for 20 years ².

Family

Carver married Lori in 1981; they have a daughter, Lindsay (born 1986), and a granddaughter, Hazel (born July 2022) ².
