Matthew Todd Johnson, who serves under the name Todd Johnson, is the Republican incumbent for North Carolina State Senate District 35, representing Cabarrus and Union Counties. First elected to the Senate in 2018, he is now serving his fourth term. He holds the position of Senate Majority Whip (2025–present). He is running for reelection in 2026 against Democratic challenger Christine Winward.

Johnson describes himself as a conservative focused on business development and public service.

Background and education

Johnson grew up in Wadesboro, North Carolina, and currently resides in Unionville, NC. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Society from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000.

Career

Johnson is the President of Johnson Insurance Management, an insurance firm founded in 1991 that has grown to eight locations. Prior to his legislative service, he served four terms as a Union County Commissioner.

Johnson has served on the Jesse Helms Center Board of Directors.
