Matthew Corey Scott

Current office and 2026 campaign

Matthew Corey Scott is the District Attorney for North Carolina Prosecutorial District 20, which encompasses all of Robeson County. He was first sworn into office on January 1, 2019, becoming the first member of the Lumbee Tribe to serve as Robeson County's District Attorney. He is running for reelection in 2026.

Scott has focused on narcotics prosecution, violent crime, and organized drug trafficking as his primary law enforcement priorities.

Background and education

Scott is a member of the Lumbee Tribe and a native of Pembroke, North Carolina, where he graduated from Purnell Swett High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science from North Carolina State University in 1999, a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002, and a Master's in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College in 2023.

Career

After completing law school, Scott entered the United States Army as a Judge Advocate and paratrooper with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg. He served 8.5 years on active duty, including a one-year combat deployment to Balad, Iraq, in 2004, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. In 2010, Scott joined the Robeson County District Attorney's Office as an Assistant District Attorney, concentrating on narcotics and violent crime prosecutions. He also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney with the Eastern District of North Carolina's Organized Crime and Drug Task Force. He continues to serve as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve.

Scott serves on the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission, the NC State University Board of Visitors, and the myFutureNC Board of Directors. He is an alumnus of Leadership North Carolina.

Family

Scott is married to Jessica Scott. They have two children, Gabriel and Ethan.
