David McLain, a Republican, is a candidate for Greene County Commission District 1 (three seats) on the August 6, 2026 county general ballot 12. He led the May 2026 Republican primary field with 833 votes and advanced to the general election 3. He has said his priorities are affordable housing for young adults and economic development along the Interstate 81 corridor, adding, "I have a lot of experience with how local government runs" 1.
Background and education
McLain, 51, is a retired educator and beef-cattle producer and a seventh-generation Greene County resident 1. He graduated from Greeneville High School, earned a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University, and holds graduate degrees from Union College and Lincoln Memorial University 1.
Career
McLain spent about 30 years in education, teaching history and driver's education before moving into administration 1. He served as principal at North Greene High School for six years and as assistant director of schools for two years, then as Director of Greene County Schools for roughly a decade before retiring in early 2025 1.
Family
He has been married to Delana McLain for 27 years; she owns the Sandwich House on Main Street 1. The couple has two sons, Dalton and Bennett 1.
