Rickey Hobson is a Democratic candidate for Fayette County Commissioner, District 12, Position 1, in Tennessee 1. He won the May 5, 2026 Democratic primary unopposed, receiving 41 of 43 votes cast (95.35%) 2. He advances to the August 6, 2026 Fayette County general election, where he will face Republican primary winner Ed Allen, who won his primary unopposed with 159 of 160 votes (99.38%) 2.
Office history
Hobson previously ran for the U.S. House in Tennessee's 8th Congressional District as a Democrat in 2014 and 2016 3. In the 2014 Democratic primary he took 33.3% of the vote (9,014 votes) and lost to Wes Bradley 3. In 2016 he won the Democratic primary with 54.8% of the vote over Gregory Alan Frye, then lost the general election to Republican incumbent David Kustoff, taking 25.1% of the vote (70,925 votes) to Kustoff's 68.8% 3.
Documented disputes and controversies
Hobson has been an outspoken critic of Fayette County's commission redistricting process, which he and others say dilutes Black voters' influence. Quoted in a Patch report on the dispute, Hobson said: "If we lay down and take this, everything is fair game. We can't wait 10 more years." He also warned the ongoing voting-rights dispute could affect the county's reputation during a period of economic growth tied to Ford's BlueOval City project 4.
