Current office and 2026 campaign
Harold M. Love Jr. is running as a Democrat in the August 6, 2026 primary for Tennessee House of Representatives District 58 (North Nashville area, Davidson County). He has represented the district since 2012 and ran unopposed in 2024.
Love has consistently advocated for gun safety legislation, criminal justice reform, healthcare access, and educational opportunity. He has been a vocal critic of legislation targeting transgender youth and other socially conservative measures passed by the Republican supermajority.
Background and education
Love was born on December 14, 1972, in Nashville, Tennessee. He is the youngest of five children and the only son of Harold Moses Love Sr. and Mary Y. Love. He was educated in Metro Nashville Public Schools and graduated with honors from Whites Creek High School in 1990. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance with a minor in Political Science from Tennessee State University in 1994, a Master of Science in Theological Studies from Vanderbilt University School of Divinity in 1998, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Tennessee State University in 2017.
Career
Love was ordained by the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1999. He served as pastor of Hopewell AME Church in Columbia, Tennessee; St. Paul AME Church in Nashville (2002-2016); and Lee Chapel AME Church in Nashville (2016-present). He was first elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 2012 and has been re-elected continuously since. He serves as the House Democratic Assistant Leader and as President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators. His committee assignments include Finance, Ways and Means; Insurance; and the TennCare Subcommittee. He also serves as faculty for the Tennessee Bar Association's continuing legal education programs.
Love is recognized for his work with the National Urban League and participates in the E Pluribus Unum Fund's policy leadership initiatives.
Family
His father, Harold Moses Love Sr., served as a Nashville city councilman (1962-1970) and as a Tennessee state representative for the 54th District (1968-1994). Love is married to Leah Dupree, an attorney, and they reside in North Nashville.
