McCready enlisted on active duty in the U.S. Army in 2003 and served with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and the 160th Special Operations Command (Airborne), completing two combat tours in Iraq; after leaving active duty in 2010 he continued in the Army Reserve as a senior instructor 4. In November 2010 he joined the City of Lexington Police Department, where he worked in patrol, community policing, and investigations 4. He was first elected Henderson County mayor in 2022 24.
