He returned to Ahoskie and joined the housing authority's maintenance staff, becoming superintendent of that staff by age 21 5. He went on to enroll at Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC), earning an associate degree in criminal justice, and later earned a bachelor's degree from Elizabeth City State University through an incentive-scholarship program an R-CCC instructor connected him with 5. Office history
Lassiter served 14 years (2009-2023) as a trustee of Roanoke-Chowan Community College, including four years as Board Chair, four years as Finance Chair, three years as Personnel Chair, and 11 years on the board's Executive Committee 6. During his tenure the college was on probation with its accrediting body after a state audit flagged fraud risk and hiring-practice violations; Lassiter has said the board's response, including hiring current president Murray Williams, helped the college earn a subsequent clean state audit 5.
