Background and education
Parrish earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science, cum laude, from Grove City College in Pennsylvania in 1987, and a Master of Arts in History and Museum Studies, with honors, from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1990.
Career
After completing his graduate degree, Parrish spent approximately ten years as the Director of Education at Eckley Miners' Village, a historic site in Weatherly, Pennsylvania. He then transitioned to classroom teaching in North Carolina, where he taught for approximately twenty-five years. His last four years in the classroom were at Jones Senior High School in Trenton, NC, where he taught history and civics. He retired from teaching in 2025 with 35 years of professional experience in education.

Parrish lives in Trenton, NC, with his wife, Karen.
