Current office and 2026 campaign

Joe Sherrill (Joseph L. Sherrill) is a Republican member of the Cumberland County Commission representing the 6th District, which elects two commissioners, and lives in Crab Orchard 13. He advanced from the May 5, 2026 county primary (about 54 percent) to the August 6 general election, alongside fellow Republican Wendell Wilson (about 45 percent) 4.

Background and education

Sherrill holds an exercise science degree and played college basketball 1.

Career

Sherrill's career includes work as a mainframe computer engineer and a 24-year role as a Department of Defense budget strategist; he is an amateur radio operator who rebuilt the emergency operations center in Roane County. In 2003 he started a software business, which he later expanded. He has also worked in the circuit court clerk's office and volunteered in youth activities and jail ministry through The Redemption Church 1.

Office history

Sherrill previously served several years on the Crab Orchard city council 1. On August 20, 2019, the County Commission elected him 14-3 to fill a vacancy in the 6th District seat, on a nomination by 6th District Commissioner Wendell Wilson 1. In May 2026 he was appointed to fill a vacancy on the county's Financial Management Committee 2.
