He was appointed to the seat by Governor Josh Stein on March 5, 2025, replacing Judge Jennifer Bedford. His current term ends December 7, 2026.\n\n## Background and education\nBrooks is a native of the Apex and Cary area of Wake County. He graduated from Apex High School and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his law degree from Campbell University School of Law.\n\n## Career\nBrooks has served in the Transportation Division of the North Carolina Department of Justice since 2006. He previously served in the Department's Criminal Division.
