He was appointed to the court by Governor Bev Perdue in 2012, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Kristin Ruth. He has been re-elected to the seat, most recently in November 2022.\n\n## Background and education\nMeyer was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and raised in Wilson, North Carolina. He earned his bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University in 1980 and his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1983.\n\n## Career\nAfter law school, Meyer practiced civil and commercial law in Wake County for twenty-seven years with the firm Poyner Spruill LLP.
