Steven Palmer Rader is a Republican incumbent on the Beaufort County Board of Education representing District 6, based in Washington, NC. He filed for re-election and ran in the 2026 Republican primary against Monica Davis.

Background and education

Rader earned a B.A. in Political Science from Duke University and a J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law, passing the North Carolina bar in 1978.

Career

Rader built a career spanning law, Republican Party leadership, and international political consulting. He served for five years as General Counsel of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services under Governor Jim Martin, and separately spent four years as Beaufort County Republican Party chairman, seven years as First Congressional District Republican chairman, and six years as a state Republican Party officer. In the 2000s and 2010s, he conducted extensive democracy-building work in the Republic of Moldova, running training seminars for newly elected local officials and heading a U.S. Department of State-funded project related to the 2014 Moldovan parliamentary election. He is a part-time instructor at Beaufort County Community College teaching State and Local Government.
