Current office and 2026 campaign

Wade Creswell is the incumbent Roane County Executive, seeking a second term ¹. He won the May 5, 2026 Republican primary with 5,164 votes to challenger Brian Mullins' 2,220 ¹², and because no Democratic or independent candidate qualified for the office, he faces no opposition on the August 6, 2026 general-election ballot ³.

Background and education

According to his campaign-published resume, Creswell graduated from Roane County High School in 1992, Roane State Community College in 1994, and East Tennessee State University in 1997, and later earned an MBA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville ⁴.

Career

Per his campaign resume, Creswell returned to Roane County after ETSU to work as a registered nurse at Roane Medical Center, then spent roughly seven years as Vice President of Development and Public Relations at the Michael Dunn Center, and about five years as President and CEO of the Roane Alliance - the county's economic-development and tourism organization - during which he also held the affiliated titles of President of the Roane County Chamber of Commerce, CEO of the Roane County Industrial Development Board, and CEO of Roane Tourism ⁴. He also served on the Kingston City Council, including as vice mayor ⁴. He left the Roane Alliance in September 2018 to become Community Relations Manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a role he held until 2021, when he was appointed Director of Development at East Tennessee Children's Hospital ⁴⁵.

Creswell was first elected Roane County Executive in 2022 and was sworn in that September ⁵; he won renomination in the May 5, 2026 Republican primary ¹².

Legislative record and accomplishments

Creswell's campaign site credits his administration with seven "major" economic-development announcements and roughly 3,030 new jobs, and with $8.56 billion in total capital investment - including, per the campaign, the largest single capital-investment project in Tennessee history - naming Malibu Boats/Cobalt (770 jobs) and Protomet (250 jobs) among recruited employers ⁶. The same source credits the administration with bringing the Roane County Jail into Tennessee Corrections Institute compliance and ending a 12-year corrective-action plan, reducing the county's overall budget from $164.3 million to $161.3 million while adding more than $2 million to the Capital Fund, and reaching what it describes as the lowest county property tax rate since 1906 ⁶. His campaign also says the administration began livestreaming County Commission meetings for the first time ⁶. Discussing his primary win, Creswell attributed regional growth partly to "net inward migration" from Knoxville and said his administration has focused on "driving the job growth through the Nuclear Renaissance" in Oak Ridge ².

Documented disputes and controversies

While president/CEO of the Roane Alliance in 2018, Creswell was a vocal public supporter of a $61 million K-14 school consolidation plan and urged county residents to "vote for people who support" it - a remark that drew criticism from county commissioners given that his position was publicly funded ⁷. Creswell later said "it was a difficult time that took a lot out of everybody involved," and cited both the school-plan fallout and a commission vote to cut the Alliance's tourism funding as factors in his decision to leave for Oak Ridge National Laboratory that September, saying the opportunity "was too much to pass up" ⁷.
