Swope began his career as the only Black executive at the agency that became Truth and Soul, Inc. He was elevated to chairman after a clerical error during a secret-ballot succession in which board members each cast a vote for the candidate they considered least threatening. Upon assuming the chairmanship he renamed the firm and refused its alcohol, war-toy, and tobacco accounts. [1][2]
